Songs For A New World

Lyrics by: Jason Robert Brown
Music by: Jason Robert Brown

Says the author of this gripping revue, "it's about one moment. It's about hitting the wall and having to make a choice, or take a stand, or turn around and go back." Newcomer Jason Robert Brown (composerlyricist
of the recent critical smash "Parade") has the whole theatre community talking about his blend of savvy showmanship and exciting contemporary
sound.

The revue’s theme is about getting a fresh start in life.  Toward that, the Seahawk Singers take the audience on a voyage from the deck of a Spanish sailing ship in 1492 to the ledge of a building 57 stories above Fifth Avenue in downtown Manhattan.  Their musical tour will introduce characters such as the young man who looks to his basketball skills to lift him from a life of despair and the woman whose dream of marrying into wealth rewards her with the man of her dreams, but a soulless marriage.  The stories and songs are poignant; some will provoke laughter, others will bring a tear to the eye.  All will cause reflection.  Musically, the revue ranges from soulful gospel favorites and blues to ballads and witty Broadway tunes.

The opening, A New World, sung by characters braving uncharted waters (it also ecurs to bridge later numbers), frames the evening nicely with its expansive  melody and message. The River Won't Flow gives  voice to the frustrations of society's dispossessed. King  of the World, a convict's aria, rails with thwarted power  and lost opportunity. The Flagmaker, 1776, depicts an  anguished mother, whose son is at war, pouring her      heartache into the task of stitching a flag.
