Lake Superior Theatre Announces Summer Season 2004

The stage is set for Lake Superior Theatre’s (LST) 2004 summer season. This year, the theatre recognized by the National Endowment for the Arts will present 4 musical shows in the Frazier Historic Boat House, located in Marquette, Michigan’s Lake Shore Blvd. between the lower harbor marina and Coast Guard break wall along the shore of Lake Superior. The summer season will begin July 7 and continue through August 13.

Beacon on the Rock, the box office hit of 1998-2002, is back for another season after it’s absence last summer.  Beacon was written by Shelley Russell with music by Robert Englehart for Marquette’s Sesquicentennial in 1998 and from this production began Lake Superior Theatre. This season’s Beacon on the Rock includes new direction by James Frounfelter with a new company and many familiar scenes from the original 1998 production.  Beacon is a musical celebration of our diverse heritage, and of the human spirit. It is a story about people who came to this isolated region and found a way to survive. It is a story of courage and vision, of laughter and tears, of the past and the future. Most of all, it is about the thousands of families who left their homelands to carve out a home from unforgiving wilderness.
They came from all over the world, families and individuals, seeking a future in a land that gave nothing away for free.  Beacon  runs Wednesday through Sunday, July 7-11 and July 14-18 at 7:30 p.m.

The broadway smash hit You’re A Good Man, Charlie Brown  comes to the LST summer stage for the first time ever.  A play for both young and old, it follows a day made up of little moments picked from all the days of Charlie Brown, from Valentine's Day to the baseball season, from wild optimism to utter despair, all mixed in with the lives of his friends (both human and non-human) and strung together on the string of a single day, from bright uncertain morning to hopeful starlit evening.  This beloved family musical is the most-produced show in the history of musical theatre. It's just an average day in the life of America's favorite kid. Spend some time with Charlie, Snoopy, Linus, Schroeder, Lucy and Sally...and enjoy one of the most memorable of all Broadway scores, including HAPPINESS, SUPPERTIME and THE BASEBALL GAME.  The show is directed by well-known Marquette theater director Dave Dagenais.

You’re A Good Man, Charlie Brown  will run Wednesday- Sunday at 7:30 pm July 21-25 and July 28- 31.

Lake Superior Theatre has teamed up with the City of Marquette Arts and Culture Center’s Youth Theatre Program to present the youth musical Dear Edwina Jr.

Thirteen year-old Edwina Spoonapple would do just about anything to be a part of the Kalamazoo Advice-a-palooza Festival. While her siblings both have proof “up on the fridge” of their accomplishments, poor Edwina has nothing. When a talent scout from the convention visits her hometown, she trots out her musical advice giving shows live from the family garage in hopes of finding her place in the spotlight. She is assisted by her older siblings (on piano and drums) and a host of quirky friends and neighbors: Becky, the perky cheerleader; Kelli, the cool, sophisticated ballerina; Annie, the girl-scout cookie-selling champion; the Vanderploonk triplets; Bobby, the befuddled new kid on the block; and Scott, who is helplessly and hopelessly in love with Edwina. Together they set out to tackle the world’s problems, in number after hysterical number about everything from birthday party etiquette to the proper way to set a table (“salad fork, fork, plate, knife, spoon”).  The show is directed by Youth Arts Education Director Nikke Nason.  Follow the adventures of advice-giver extraordinaire, Edwina Spoonapple as she directs the kids in the neighborhood in production number after hilarious production number in her "Advice-A-Palooza" extravaganza. Written in the style of Schoolhouse Rock Live! and You're A Good Man Charlie Brown.

Dear Edwina Jr. will run Wednesday- Saturday August 4-7 at 7:30 p.m.

Wrapping up the season will be the historical cabaret Songs on the Shore.  This cabaret will feature songs and scenes from past Lake Superior Theatre productions including Haywire, Points North, Superior Heroes, Voelker: Life on the Fly along with popular Upper Peninsula songwriters and historical events.   A multi-media presentation along with narration from community members will make this more than just a cabaret.  Songs along with history will make for an enjoyable evening along the shore for both young and old.  The show will feature the Lake Superior Theatre Company along with community guests.

Songs on the Shore will run Wednesday-Friday August 11-13 at 7:30 p.m.
