Huron Islands
Huron Islands National Wildlife Refuge, a satellite of Seney National
Wildlife Refuge, includes eight small islands about three miles from the
mainland. Here 200-foot granite walls rise pink and gray above the water of
Lake Superior, providing nesting sites for colonies of herring gulls and
cormorants.
West Huron Island (also known as Lighthouse Island), the second largest
of the eight, still bears signs of human use. The lighthouse,
built
in 1868, was automated in 1972 and the island was abandoned. Four other
buildings still stand, two of them on an 11-acre parcel administered by the
U.S. Coast Guard.
If you choose, you also have the option for getting off of the boat and
exploring the island and lighthouse on foot. If the weather is right, you
might even choose to take a refreshing dip in Lake Superior!
When choosing this adventure note that this adventure takes up most of the
day leave your self
enough time to enjoy the trip. This trip includes scenic big bay and views
of the famous Huron Mountain club from the lake. |
