Lake Superior Yacht Yard (Lake Superior Theatre) History

The Lake Superior Yacht Yard was built in 1926 by Maxwell K. Reynolds Sr. who was married
to Frances Jopling, a descendant of PeterWhite. Themain boat house and railwaywas
built to accommodate the originalYankee Girl, a 53’John Alden schooner. The primary purpose
of the shop was to support and maintain this wooden sailboat and featured custom innovative
machinery. An interesting historical project also took place in the shop. Reynolds designed
and constructed a number of iron lungs which were used during a major polio epidemic in
Marquette County in the 30’s. The railway was originally used to haul and store a number of
commercial fishing vessels. During thewar, the railwaywas used to haul and store“picket”boats
(guard boats for the iron ore docks). In the 70’s the railway was used to haul and store Coast
Guard rescue vessels. Later the boat house was the winter home of the Yankee Girl owned by
Lincoln Frazier and today area recreational boaters winter their vessels on the grounds, Peter
Frazier stores Pelican in the Boat House, and in the summer it is transformed into the Lake Superior Theatre. With comfortable seats, air conditioning, and professional lights and sound this is a must see for your visit.
A SPECIAL THANK YOU TO PETE & PEGGY FRAZIER, PRODUCERS
Welcome to Lake Superior Theatre. When the lights dim , the performers come on stage, and legends from the past seem to come to life right before our eyes, we forget about the long hours it takes to turn a working boathouse into a theatre. The Cast and Crew give up a good part of our short summers to share their amazing talent and artistry each year bringing you new shows and we know you join us in thanking them for keeping the magic of LST alive. As Shelley Russell has said, "This theatre is of the U.P., built like this place has been built, on rock, with industry and pride,
with a need for beauty, with hope, and with reverence for the life and lives around us."
