BIG BAY

Big Bay is 23 miles north of Marquette near Lake Superior and Lake Independence, surrounded by water and wilderness. The town of Big Bay is situated on Lake Independence, with Lake Superior to the north and east and the McCormick Wilderness Tract and the Huron Mountains to the west.

The Big Bay Point Lighthouse stands on a rocky point halfway between Marquette and the Keweenaw Portage Entry. The establishment of a station at Big Bay Point was recommended to the Lighthouse board in 1882 as follows: "The point occupies a position midway between Granite Island and Huron Islands, the distance in each case being 15 to 18 miles.

The waterfront along big bay is virtually untouched and still as was years ago, from rugged rocky cliffs to sandstone caves and forests Big Bay has it all.
